On March 30, 2024, Silat Wassel , with the support of the International Journalists’ Network (IJNet), organized a training dedicated to journalism and media students from universities in South Lebanon – in Tyre and Sidon – on the right to access information.
Over time, journalism has become a vital tool for strengthening democracy and accountability in societies. South Lebanon, particularly Sidon and Tyre, stands out for its cultural and social vibrancy, yet it also faces challenges that need to be highlighted. Accountability and transparency are undoubtedly fundamental to the development of any society, and this media project represents an important step toward reinforcing these values in this key region.
Our project aimed to empower university students in Sidon and Tyre with media and journalism skills, encouraging them to use these tools to promote accountability and transparency in their communities. By shedding light on issues related to access to information and its significance, this training enabled students to understand investigative journalism techniques that strengthen the principle of accountability.
Twenty-five specialized students were selected to take part in this training, where they acquired the necessary skills to produce three in-depth reports highlighting core issues of accountability and transparency in their region.
